Avon I hope you don't mind but I put in a spoiler warning for those who don't know yet and don't want too ok? ~~TASS~~ Spoiler Warning************************************** ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! "Well now," after just one episode has been screened CHRIS has announced that he's quit the series.
WHY? He says he doesn't want to be type-cast and, permanently associated with the role of the DOCTOR!!!
IF that's true then why in the, HELL did he put himself forward for the part and, then spend 9 months making it. He knew the responsibility he was facing in bringing the character back to the TV and, IF he didn't realise what he was truly letting himself in for - from Day ONE and, that this would be part of his life permanently, then - TOUGH!!!
He'll, always be known now as an, EX-DOCTOR WHO for the rest of his Natural life.

I was just going to post this but you beat me too it-LOL- I hope you don't mind about the spoiler Tag being added. ************Spoilers************************************ ! ! ! ! ! But I think it goes to show how they jumped the gun with him at all, I wasn't especially impressed when they shouted to the world about him being the doctor, and why would they not have signed him to a contract for a certain amount of time with a clause for future season's is beyond me. This really bites the big one--If I may say. that leaves us with what 3 or 4 regenerations left? they had better think long and hard about the next doctor, and make sure that he is up for the part for a good long time-grrrrrr-----

Unlike, with US tv series UK ones rarely have actors sign up to more than a year at a time!!!
Infact, one rare exception was B7 - in that the cast were signed for a two-season contract. Which, is why Gareth (BLAKE) couldn't leave the show until the start of the third series.

I still find that his reasoning for not doing a second season being that he doesn't want to be type casted. Considering that he is better know for his roles as psycho killers and the second coming I think type casting would be the leased of his worries. Still this has to make him the shortest run Doctor outside of the movies.

From IMDB: Doctor Who To Play 'Da Vinci Code' Thug? British actor Christopher Eccleston has wasted no time in finding his next big project after giving up on TV series Doctor Who after one season - he's reportedly in talks to play the villain of The Da Vinci Code. The Gone In 60 Seconds star is said to be the new favorite to play killer monk Silas in director Ron Howard's adaptation of Dan Brown's best-selling book, according to website Digitalspy.Com. Jim Carrey was also rumored to be in talks for the role of the monk, who is a fearsome albino in the story. The Da Vinci Code, which will star Tom Hanks, Jean Reno and Audrey Tautou, begins filming in June.
