I've just spent some time in the great sandpit we know as Iraq. One of the things I noticed is that many soldiers of all nations have their own laptops and they all seem to have an enviable collection of Star Wars DVDs. One group of UK soldiers I visited, have their own "cast". They sit around the screen and play the movies with the sound off and they have their own scripts. Just the British and Scottish accents were funny on their own, but chuck in a Trinidadian and Welsh accent and it was hilarious.
Star Wars is big to these guys and they use it mainly as trigger mechanisms for the release of pent up energy. But seeing Yoda on the screen and hearing him say,
"Not going to get far, are you, without your pants on, young Jedi. Gay night was yesterday, it was,"
in a broad Jamaican accent just had to be seen and heard to be appreciated. And before you ask, all the DVDs I saw were legally purchased and no illegally looking copied ones.
And what do they use as a story line? Why the war in Iraq, of course. And Saddam Vader is a very popular character! They have an Empire of Evil, the media are refered to as the Lost Race of Ewoks, the Princess is Condalezza Rice, The Sith are all from KAOS (Get Smart), and Obi Wan Ken obi is playfully called Colonel Jack O'Neill.

Graham glad to have you back with us safe and sound, I bet it would have been absolutely hilarious to hear that, I am glad the troops are getting a bit of variety and adding to the Star Wars mystique all on their own.
