No threads or posts about Hostel? High Tension? Devil's Rejects? Land of the Dead? Saw/Saw2/Saw3? Skinwalkers? Locals? Zombie King?
Nothing??... 'tis a sad state of affairs.

Thought I'd reply, and not meaning to embellish my ignorance on the Horror side of things, but I haven't seen any of the above titles you listed. Unfortunately my wife get's too scared watching these things; I, of course, am extremely brave, ahem : . I have seen The Thing, oh, and just before Christmas, a Zombie film where the people all hid in a Superstore Complex, one of the ladies had a Zombie baby, Yuk . I do read the horror posts and if I read a post I can partake in, I will, promise. However, I am sure there are others on the forum that will be far more into horror than I. Maybe they just need someone to lead the way

I thought I was a pretty good horror freak, but I don't recognize those you listed, Spike. I would know more about the mummy, Frankenstein, wolfman, vampire in the classic sense. I don't miss Steven King or Anne Rice when it comes to the newer frights.

Okay, so they're all fairly recent films . "Hostel" opened in the theatres this past weekend, directed by Eli Roth, whose debute film "Cabin Fever" drew rave reviews. "Hostel" has been in the news recently because of the amount of brutal torture and gore in it. There have been confirmed reports of theatre patrons fainting... "High Tension" is a french indie horror film that was released last fall on DVD. It's been the darling of several film festivals around the world and has also drawn rave reviews. There was enough hype on this one that I bought it sight-unseen when it was released. I wasn't disappointed... highly recommended. It's in the video stores now. "The Devil's Rejects" is Rob Zombie's sequel to "House of 10,000 Corpses". His first film sat on a shelf for nearly two years while Rob was looking for a distributor that was willing to handle it. It was very much a homage to the classic "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and set in the same period. "Rejects" does a nice job of picking up the story of the homicidal family that the first is based on with a much better production value (Rob obviously had a bit more money to play with this time around). George Romero's "Land of the Dead" was released in the theatres last June and on DVD in October. Not one of his best despite the massive (for George) budget, but it's still a lot of zombie fun. It's fun spotting the Toronto landmarks like BCE Place, the Gardner Expressway and the Cherry St. Bridge too. The Saw franchise began a year and a half ago, with the low budget "Saw". "Saw II" was released in the theatres last Halloween (and comes out on DVD in February), and Saw III is allegedly in preproduction. The storyline is a serial killer abducts morally-deficient folk of various flavours and puts them in trap situations where they have to do something horrible (kill a person, main themselves, etc.) to survive before the clock runs out. Skinwalkers is a big-budget werewolf film that was shot in-and-around Toronto last fall and is currently in post-production, due in the theatres this October. It's notable for Stan Winston Studios having a big part in producing the film as well as doing the creature effects. Stan's never done werewolves before but has always wanted to. It looks like it'll be a good one. "Locals" is an indie New Zealand horror movie at the video stores. It's tough to give any of the plot without giving anything away, but I found it to be a very clever film and quite good. "Enter... Zombie King!"... I don't generally expect anyone to have heard of this one, let alone watched it! An old highschool friend of mine cowrote and produced this direct-to-DVD piece of work that involves zombies, nude internet models and mexican wrestlers. Yep, it's about as campy as they come! It was also shoot in-and-around Toronto.

It was also shoot in-and-around Toronto. I really liked Cabin Fever, so I'll have to see what all the fainting is about, but I will probably have to wait for it to hit satellite. I have trouble getting others to go watch horror in the theaters. Maybe High Tension will hit satellite soon then. Devil's Rejects sounds like something I'd watch. Texas Chainsaw Massacre was what I called my sister's first C-section I got to witness. If reality doesn't get me, then I doubt that this will drive me over the edge. I just posted some Toronto photos with Ger (? sp) from Forever Knight, and they were night photos. I had no idea Toronto looked that good. I'm not sure about the self maiming flick. . . Hmmmm Now the werewolf movie sounds good. I really like "American Werewolf In London", and it was really something for the time when it came out. I love the humor Landis put in it along with the horror. I'll have to see this one. Locals in New Zealand, huh? Well, it's got New Zealand going for it. Have to check out the IMDB. I've never been one much for zombies . . . .(Mexican wrestlers? ). Glad to have another horror fan around.

Ah, I think I've seen Cabin Fever (blonde girl in shed rotting away!?). I have also seen Wrong Turn (if it's the film with the dark haired Slayer from Buffy the Vamp Slayer). Oh and Jeepers Creepers 2(although I actually thought this was a little funny). As the wife is into the paranormal/ghost side of things we also got White noise and Stir of Echoes at Christmas(although we've not had a chance to see them yet as Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, Invasion, Surface, Battlestar Galactica, Threshold and Lost take priority.) I love Sci-Fi ;D ;D Although if she gave me that look (that all wives have the ability to), I'm sure I'd be watching those films. ;D

Maybe High Tension will hit satellite soon then. It's worth looking out for. It starts your standard "local lunatic goes on a messy killing spree" fare, and then gets... odd . That's part of why filmmakers like Toronto; you can pick parts of it that look just about like anywhere . Geraint Wyn Davies is also in the horror/thriller Cube 2: Hypercube as a fairly decent villian. It's worth a watch when you're bored. I read the script for "Skinwalkers" while doing some work for it, and it reads pretty good: two warring factions of werewolves go at it in modern rural middle America. The werewolf effects are nearly exclusively done with F/X makeup (much like AWiL), and looked fantastic. I think zombie flicks have just about run their course in recent years and there hasn't been new much on the werewolf front since the "Ginger Snaps" films. It does that. And it's got a nice "Wrong Turn" thing going for it, with a good twist. It has to be seen to be believed, honest . cheers, Adam

I'm into horror but I confess I'm more into the oldies than some of the recent ones. With children it's difficult sometimes to get the time to see the more recent horror movies. I hear you there. It frustrates my son to no end that I won't let him see or watch any of the flicks Ive worked on . But on the "getting out" front, I figure that's what rental DVDs are for. And for the price of a single theatre seat today you can rent two or three new-release movies. cheers, Adam
