Good question(s) here come the answers: I was shown at the cinema (in 1960s). I have definately been on TV (as this is where I first saw it in the 1970s: enigma ;D). And...my origin was from a novel from a rather noted author. Nice one LadyTass2001 What country does the stories take place that we find you?

Thanks Jabberwocky, I will recap (and possibly add a few more clues;D)
It is a specific film (released in 1960s) that I star in. Based on a novel by a rather famous author. It has been re-run on TV several times over the 70s and 80s.
I am a male character, leader of my group.
Our starting location is America (North) ;D

Well I have to say that I'm stumped so far. Anyone else got a question to help bring in more light on this one.

OK another clue:
We start off in America but where we end up is unknown ;D
However, we meet a 'Captain' with a rather special underwater vehicle ;D

Well, I'm thinking Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, based on the novel by Jules Verne.

Ouch, Vanguard, If we were playing Hot or Cold you'd be burning. Yes the Captain we meet is Nemo. ;D AND... the author is indeed Jules Verne, but it isn't the film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. ;D Remember:

OK, I'm away on a course until Friday, so I'll recap on the clues so far in the hope someone gets this character. If there are no takers whilst I'm gone I'll post the answer on Friday. Then whoever logs in first can start the next who am I. ;D
This is a film (1960s) made from a Jules Verne Novel.
I am male.
I am leader of a group.
We start off in America but end up somewhere unknown.
Whilst we're there (place unknown), we meet Captain Nemo.
Any takers?

No I only know of one book that Jules Verne wrote that had Captain Nemo in it and you said its not that one. So I have to say I'm stumped.

THe character was Capt. Cyrus Harding, leader of a band of Unionist prisoners who escape from a prison in a hot air balloon, in a film called Mysterious Island
"This fantasy adventure is based on the 1870 novel by Jules Verne. A small, motley group of soldiers and civilians flee the 1865 siege of Richmond via a hot air balloon, and end up on an isolated island crawling with over-sized crabs, birds, and bees. Even more astonishing, they discover three other humans inhabiting the island: two shipwrecked women and the illustrious, long-lost Captain Nemo. Ray Harryhausen's special effects, which include a battle with a giant crab and abduction by an enormous bird, still have the power to thrill and amaze."
I guess as you have been the biggest participant, I'll hand the reigns over to you, Jabberwocky, Good Luck ;D
