Just thought I'd mention a set of books I read from the author Brian Lumley.
Necroscope Necroscope II: Vamphyri! Necroscope III: The Source Necroscope IV: Deadspeak Necroscope V: Deadspawn
It was a few years back but I can recall that they were a good read and put an interesting slant on the vampire world:
It took place around the 1990s and centred around a British Intelligence Unit that utilised people with special psi abilities (ie 'ability to locate people', 'ability to tell if someone is lying', 'the ability of self preservation' etc).
The hero of the books is a Necroscope 'someone who can talk to the dead'. There are several villains throughout the series of books, the first being a necromancer, this character has the ability to interrogate the dead for their secrets, inflicting pain as he goes; imagine a person that could torture you past death (effectively forever!). Well, this character finds out about someone/thing that has the ability to live forever (only that something turns out to be a vampire who was trapped and burried long ago). Believe me this vampire is one cunning ^&$^%$!
Worth checking out even if you borrow it from the library.
